Planning vs. Opportunity

Many times I can spend hours trying to get the perfect shot. Drive to whatever location I want or set up my makeshift "studio" at home. Find my subject and then spend ages with different settings, different angles, lighting, waiting for sun etc. etc.
Even when all the preparation in the world has been done and I've taken numerous shots (the joy of digital) I still end up with a card full of shots I'm not happy with. It can be a very frustrating occupation some days. Some days it works and some days it doesn't.

On the other hand sometimes an opportunity presents itself when you least expect it, you take a quick snapshot and viola, you have a great picture. It's great, but also somewhat annoying when this happens.
One such example of an opportunity is this photo. I think it looks quite a well set up shot. Nice, clean, black background, interesting pink foreground and lovely fresh daisy. The camera can lie though. The story behind this picture is one of love and kindness of a small boy to his expectant mum. My son brought me this daisy that he picked in the garden of my sister one day that we were visiting. I was 8.5 months pregnant with my daughter at the time and basically adopting classic "beached whale" pose on a comfy chair. I rested the daisy on my, rather large, tummy, drew my legs up (clothed in black trousers) to create a backdrop and took a few photos with my 60mm fixed macro lens. This was the best of the bunch and one of my favourite pictures. Not only the subject and quality of the picture, but the story behind it.
Moral of the story, always have your camera, wherever you go. You never know when an opportunity will arise.
This photo is available as a greetings card as well as a mounted or framed 10x8" print. Please contact me at wendy@mayflowerphotography.co.uk if you are interested in purchasing this picture. Other sized prints may be available on request.

Shameless Advert.

I shall be exhibiting at the Craft and Collectables Fair at Plinston Hall in Letchworth on Sunday. http://www.plinston.com/event/craft_and_collectables_fair Its my first time at this fair and I'm hoping it will be a success. They are doing another one on 6th June so if it goes well on Sunday I will book up for then too.
If you're in the area pop in and say hello and see some of my pictures in the flesh. Wide range of mounted and framed prints will be available.

What's in a name?

I just thought I'd shed some light on the name Mayflower Photography.
Anyone who has ever started a business has probably been through the nightmare that is choosing a name. It's almost as stressful as naming a child, which in my case was no easy feat.
Nowadays, it's not just choosing a "different", eye catching name, but the availability of a web address. Is it ok to just have .co.uk or would it be preferable to have the .com as well?
To start with I thought of using just my name as seems to be very common amongst photographers, but I didn't feel it sounded right. So then on to finding some inspiration from things I like. Flowers, the colour purple, hippos (slightly random, but I've always had a fondness for these amazing creatures) etc. I tried using names to do with light, colour etc. as they is a major factor in photography, but all I could come up with were either already taken as web addresses or just didn't sound right.
So after many evenings of discussions with my husband and checking the availability of everything we came up with I was browsing through my photographs and came across this picture. This is one of the first "proper" photos I took when I was just starting to take a serious interest in photography. It was taken at a local steam museum we were visiting with my son who has a minor obsession with steam engines.
This train is The Mayflower. I saw it and loved the name. www.mayflowerphotography.co.uk was available as a site and so it was decided. This would be the name of my new business.
